On the May 2nd group ride there were several instances of riders swarming around, and in front, of cars at stop signs. This is a serious issue and we need to be cognizant that this gives us all a poor reputation as cyclists. Folks, the MCC does a lot of good for the community and our sponsors want to be associated with a club that doesn't reflect poorly on them. Disobeying traffic laws, and being discourteous to drivers, reflects poorly on the MCC, our sponsors, and cyclists everywhere. When on … Read More

The day you have been waiting for has finally arrived. MCC group rides start this week. Consult the MCC website for details. We hope to see you all there, looking forward to another great season of riding and fellowship.
Also, a quick thank-you to those of you who decided to support MCC by joining this year. And for those of you who have not yet joined, a quick reminder. If you enjoy the group rides and the other things MCC has to offer, remember that these things would not be there for…

I hope you enjoyed your winter activities and are ready to begin riding soon. Our first Club for the 2012 season, Movie Night, is happening March 22 at the Keene Public Library auditorium from 6:30 until 9:00 in the evening. This year's movie is "The Road to Roubaix," a documentary about the race that is also known as the @#$% of the North. As always, there is no charge to see the film, and we will serve popcorn and soft drinks, also at no charge.
Prior to the showing of th…

I now own an Apple iPhone 4S. Any suggestions on navigation Apps that include elevation changes? Thanks.
Please to reply.
check out mapmyride. not sure if you want an app to replace a cycle computer, or something to track a route and look at elevation gain afterward. mapmyride does the second, but does display speed, distance in real time.
Thanks, Marc. Mapmyride is just what I want for now. I may go to a Garmin later to have a complete cockpit full of readouts in front of me. It's on-line sharing feature is pretty cool and something the club might be able to piggyback on. When people run out of ideas for B and C rides, just reference Mapmyride.

MCC ventures to Oregon. I finally created a photoshare site on shutterfly from my mountain bike trip to Oregon this July. I know I told a few people about this trip. Umpqua river trail in central Oregon. Check out the photos including some wonderfully posed XXL MCC jersey marketing pictures! I was riding out on the front of the group the entire time so unfortunately there are no action shots of yours truly.

Anyone have a recommendation for a bike travel cover - the type you put over your handlebar and it stretches over the saddle. Need something to protect the bike on my roof rack. I'm looking up some online, but hard to pick. Thx.

I went on the web and looked him up. Found some pictues and I am pretty well convinced it was him. He was an olympian three times and 1974 US National Road Champion. Seemed like a nice guy and pretty unassuming.
There were six of us on Sunday. Nice 60 or so mile loop on an absolutely perfect morning for riding.

Here's a link to my Garmin data from Sunday's ride if anyone wants to check out this fantastic loop:

The MCC Peerless Sunday group had the pleasure of meeting former Olympian (and one of the first Americans to race in Europe since Major Taylor in the early 60's) John Allis on the road in Dublin today where he is now living. At least some fast old dude on a steel fixie claimed he was John Allis.

I dropped an Olympian on a descent! Of course, I was on a geared bicycle and he was spinning like crazy on a single speed :)
For those who are interested, you can check out the following:

I agree with Steve. There are a lot of "real world" measurements you can use. For instance I've noticed my TT times consistently improve until peaking in mid-July season after season.
Please to reply.
Here's a "loaded question". In folks opinion what's the best way to judge cycling improvement? Avg. speed, heart rate, precieved exertion or some other way?
Please to reply.
I'm sure you'll get a lot of different answers but I'm assuming by "cycling improvement" you mean power/strength/endurance vs something very different such as race tactics or cornering. For the latter, I personally have used a few different measures. I was lucky enough to win a trainer that measures power output in watts. Every once and awhile I will do a TT on the trainer and see how many watts I can average for 10 mins. You divide that by your weight in pounds or kilos to get an aver… Read More
That is a loaded question. I have pretty much stopped all discussions with the group, but this questions makes me feel the where I was a few years back. First, what do you wish to improve? Second, perform a test (you can download a road or trainer test from many of the top coaching sites). from there you will now have a baseline of what you are capable of doing. if you have a powertap or other powermeter, that will help (no, is essential) for training.
To improve one will usually want …

I have a Bell Array which is a pretty decent helmet. You can spend more and probably get more vents though!
Please to reply.
Thanks Jeff. I'll check it out.
Hey folks - any recommendations for helmets that are reasonably priced and known for being very cool (great air flow). I'm a wild sweat hog in any weather over 60 degrees. I have all sorts of headbands etc., but I'd like to find the Holy Grail of "cool" helmets. I'd even pay a premium for one if it was really going to make a difference.
Please to reply.
I'm pretty happy with the Specialized Echelon helmet I bought last year from Andy's. You can get more expensive ones that are lighter and have more vents but I think it's a great bargain for the money. It has a lot of vents (25, I think) including several along the front that do a great job catching air on the descents and the flats. I think it's a nice blend of efficiency and cost. If you shop around, look for the one with the largest number of vents and vents that are well placed in the fr… Read More

It was very nice running into Dave Barry at the gym the other day. I hope to see you out on the road as well. I know you are busy, but if you are ever looking for a ride on the weekend, give me a call and maybe we can get together. As you now know, I have a little added upper body mass, so the hills hit me pretty hard, but I can offer you some buffering on the flats! All kidding aside, give me a shout if you want to ride someday or have a ride going on someplace as well.

I have some news for anyone interested in purchasing Cannondale bikes. After finishing my research, I opted to buy a Cannondale Slice 3 TT bike--although I love Specialized, I really preferred the Slice over the Transition (after determining the Shiv was too expensive). There wasn't a Cannondale dealer nearby so I asked Bruce at Andy's Cycle if he could get me one. He went a bit further and struck a deal with Cannondale to once again start selling their bikes. So anyone interested in Cannond… Read More

Hi all,
The Club clothing order went in just after movie night and is due to arrive here late April. So too late for this order if you were wondering. We did order a few extras available on a 1st come/1st served basis. Also, if we have enough interest to meet the manufactures minimum, we might be able to do a second order later in the spring. If interested please contact me. Thanks!

Did I miss the chance to order a jersey/kit? I sent in membership fee and form, but perhaps the order already went in.

I'm considering buying a TT bike. After some research, I'm leaning towards either a Specialized Transition Pro or a Cannondale Slice 3 with Ultegra componentry. Anyone have an opinion one way or another? How about other ideas? I'm not completely sold on either bike--anyone have any other ideas? I'm not looking to drop $10k on a bike...I simply want a nice TT bike to use for the few times I do TT rides each year.
Darren
Please to reply.
I know I could spend $10k+ if I wanted to. I don't, however (especially for a bike which such limited possibilities for usage). Fortunately I don't have to spend that much. Both the Slice 3 Ultegra or Transition Pro retail for less than $3,800 (that includes the frame, wheels, componentry, and an integrated aero bar/stem). So I'm looking middle of the road and not elite, upper end. I'll consider spending $10k on a TT bike when I start putting out 50+ MPH speeds like Cancellara does. Until … Read More
Yup, that is how I started with my bike. I got the upper end model Slice from a good friend of mine at his dealer cost, then over the course of a season and half, upgraded. I have mine for sale or if you want to at least ride it for comparison. After all, that will take the guess work out of wondering if you like the Slice or not. Your decision to try it and feel what a TT bike is like. We can swap out wheel too and see the difference as well. Yes, you can hit 50 mph on a TT bike!
Speaking of books, as a fan of BikeSnobNYC I was looking forward to his recently published book. It's a beautifully designed little hardback but unfortunately was disappointing. Good for a total beginner but otherwise a lame effort with some decent humor but not much else of interest. I have a copy up for grabs if anybody is interested before I donate it to the library. I recommend reading his old blog pieces-much more fun

For those of you who missed the Hincappie film Monday night I'll give my totally nonprofessional opinion. It was definitely an interesting documentary. I liked the style of the film maker and the use of unusual tecniques like the mirroring segment and George pedalling backward down the hill. The music score was excellent. However, too much talk and not enough action. Endless interviewing with the main point being George is/was a great team player. We all know that. The footage from past e… Read More

I was hoping to see more about racing. They stated he was a great cobblestone classics rider and you see a little evidence from Paris-Roubaix but that was it. We learned little about his other racing accomplishments--for example, 2005 wasn't chronicled as a milestone year for Hincapie despite winning Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne, 2 stages at the Dauphine, and GP Ouest along with 7th at Flanders...instead, we saw his loss to Boonen at Roubaix and his stage victory in the Tour. There's a reason why H… Read More

Matt, I too have Red on my Tarmac. others do not like it as much as Campy, but I like it. The shifters have a neat feature, whereas on a sprint, you can pull the levers in to the bar (when in the drops) and can then shift as needed without having to change your hand positioning. I spoke to the head engineer about this and they found out after the fact that the shifters operate like that. They considered changing it, but in testing, they found racers liked it. Just a little fact that is pretty mu… Read More

Anybody in the market for top shelf race bikes, frames or components should think about buying sooner rather than later. When the UCI gets their approval system up and running that little UCI sticker attached to every frame & component is going to cost you extra as the bike companies recover their compliance costs. Hopefully it won't affect Ultegra, Chorus, Force and lower priced components and bikes fitted with them.
Please to reply.
I just got a new bike. Its a Blue RC8 with SRAM Red - its going to be a wicked bike to race on this summer. It weighs under 15 pounds, so I got into a conversation with the owner of the store that I got it from in Greenfield MA about this UCI thing. Probably going to be for Dura-Ace and above, though.
Congrats Matt. A lot of the pros will be racing on SRAM Red so you beat the "sticker shock". We'll have to attach a bungee to you on the climbs this summer.
